The opening week of the 2010 season found the Saints pitted against the Matadors of Shadow Mountain. With a big, physical and athletic group, Shadow Mountain proved to be a formidable opponent. The Saints jumped out to an early 7-0 lead when Bret Berry scored on a 30 yard run. Although momentum was on the Saints’ side, Shadow countered quickly by tying the game on the insuring possession and eventually taking a 14-7 by the end of the first quarter. Once again, the Saints’ offense was up to the task, rallying to score 20 points in the second quarter. Korey Jones found the end zone early in the second after a long drive which was followed up by Berry’s 55 yard touchdown run. The Saints finished the half by marching 98 yards in just over two minutes. Jordan Gehrke culminated the drive with a 14 yard strike to receiver Brian Poupore as time expired and the Saints found themselves holding a 27-20 halftime lead. The Saints’ defense settled down in the second half and their final score game on a Gehrke to Brian Canavan TD in the third quarter. All told, the Saints amassed more than 400 yards of offense with nearly three hundred coming from the run game. Despite some ups and downs which are typical of a week one game, the Saints will look to improve as they travel to Desert Edge next week to face the 2-0 Scorpions. See you next week at Desert Edge.
